LOS ANGELES (AP) — Without ever lifting a shovel, anarchaeologist could dig through Dave Chameides' house and get apretty good picture of how he has lived for the past eight months.

Empty soda bottles lead down the staircase. Pizza boxes line thewalls. In the cellar are neatly stacked Styrofoam trays, used teabags and plastic wrap.

Almost every bit of Chameides' garbage has been carefully preservedin a testament to the volume of trash produced by daily living.

What's even more surprising is what he doesn't have to show for it.While the average American generates more than 900 pounds ofgarbage in eight months, Chameides has produced only 30 pounds.

"Whenever I tell people what I'm doing, there's always that look— the furrowed brow and then the 'I'm sorry? You're doingwhat?'" said the freelance cameraman for "Nip/Tuck," the FX plastic surgery show that celebrates excess. "I tell people I know this isnuts."

STypically, we only do what is called third-tier automotivework, Mr. Lotufo said, but he hopes that will soon change.

SOur goal is to have (the upgrade) in place by 2010, he said.

Volkswagen officials said they expect construction to be completeon their Enterprise South industrial park facility by late 2010 andbegin producing cars.

Waste plastic to be burnt in cement factory

Bhopal, Aug 16: This City of Lakes is all set to be free from plastic hazards.

Non-biodegradable plastic, which poses a threat to the environmentfor decades, is going to be scrapped from here by burning it withcoal as fuel in a cement factory.

''A truck loaded with 10 tonnes plastic has been sent to theKatni-based ACC Cement factory from here,'' Madhya PradeshPollution Control Board Chairman S P Gautam told reporters today.

He claimed that, for the first time in the country, a state istaking up the task of destroying plastic in a constructive way.

''Destroying plastic is a gigantic problem as on burning at normaltemperature it produces toxic gases, after burying it takes 400years to decompose and if disposed in water it creates blockages,''said Mr Gautam, adding that burning plastic at 900 degrees Celciusmade it serve as a fuel.

Mayor Sunil Sood flagged off the lorry and promised that theMunicipal Corporation would pay the truck fare for this endeavour.The voluntary organisation Sarthak Samudayik Jankalyan Sanstha tookthe task of picking up the plastic from the city.

''Of the total present plastic, 80 per cent is recyclable. Hence,the remainder will be burned in the factory,'' Mr Gautam added.

NEW DELHI: The Delhi government has always pleaded helplessness inchecking the menace of plastic waste. But, last week it got a shotin the arm to rein in units violating plastic recycling andmanufacturing rules after the Delhi High Court ordered restricteduse of plastic bags in the city.

The government believes that the order would act as a deterrent forsuch factories as they would directly face contempt of court.

Reacting to the order for the first time after the judgment cameout last week, environment secretary J K Dadoo said many of thecity's problems could be taken care of if the plastic industrycomes forward to set up a modern recycling plant in the city.

"Based on the 'polluters pay' principal, the plastic manufacturersassociation should take the initiative of setting up a plant here.We have been in talks with them but they haven't shown muchinterest. Now, if they don't act, they would be violating courtorders," he said.

Tesco customers have saved a staggering two billion carrier bagssince Green Clubcard Points were launched in August 2006. Carrierbag use by Tesco shoppers in the last month is 40% lower than forthe same period two years ago.

Throughout the month of July in 2006, Tesco gave its customersapproximately 350 million single-use carrier bags. In July 2008,that had dropped to just 200 million.

Plastic bag charge trial to start

A trial of plastic bag charges at supermarkets starts in threeVictorian regions tomorrow.

The trial will see shoppers at Fountain Gate, Wangarratta andWarrnambool paying a 10 cent government and industry charge foreach plastic checkout bag.

The results will be assessed after four weeks.

Environment Minister Gavin Jennings says believes consumers willsupport the program.

"We think people want to reduce the amount of plastic going intolandfill and ending up in the waste stream, and this is anencouragement for them to use those reusable and recyclable bags,"he said.

Trial of plastic bag levy starts today

THE four-week trial of a 10-cent levy on plastic bags will belaunched this morning in Victoria.

The trial aims to cut plastic bag usage and will be launched at asupermarket in Narre Warren, on Melbourne's south-easternoutskirts, by Victorian Environment Minister Gavin Jennings.

Coles, Safeway and IGA retailers in Narre Warren, Wangaratta, inthe state's north-east, and Warnambool, in the south-west, will allparticipate in the trial, to run from tomorrow to September 14.

The competition watchdog gave the final green light last week for afour-week trial of a 10-cent plastic bag levy in regional Victoria.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has alsoauthorised the supermarkets to publicly release data showing howcustomers responded to the charge.

The data it gathers will help the retail industry and Victoriangovernment devise a strategy on reducing plastic bag use.

Profits made during the trial will go towards environmentalprojects.

Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) have resisted calls to lower prices, citing tight regionalproduct availability and good demand for LDPE outside Asia,including in Africa and Latin America. One producer toldPolymerupdate that its selling general-purpose LDPE grades tomarkets like China at $1970/tonne to $1980/tonne, with offers tosome other Asian markets at $2000/tonne CFR.

In Europe, general-purpose LDPE contract prices were assessed ateuro 1540/tonne FD North West Europe, with spot prices rising byeuro 10 to euro 1510/tonne FD North West Europe.

). The later fixing of quarterly contracts for ethylene (C2) andpropylene (C3) contributed to the hectic market, the newsletternotes. The biggest increases were seen for LDPE and LLDPE filmgrades.

On the production capacity front, Qatar Steel is expected toproduce 2.3mn tonnes of sponge iron; 1.63mn tonnes of molten steel;1.60mn tonnes of billet; 1.75mn tonnes of bar and 300,000 tonnes ofwire rod coil in this year.

Qatar Petrochemicals Company (Qapco) has reported more than doublednet profit to QR1.58mn, which was 34% of IQ’s net profit for thefirst six months of this year. In the previous year period,Qapco’s share in IQ net profit was of the same proportion.

Qapco’s net profit surge came amidst more than doubled totalrevenue to QR2.31mn in the review period.

Qapco is expecting to sell 315,000 tonnes of ethylene; 400,000tonnes of low density polyethylene (LDPE); 37,000 tonnes of C3/C4(liquefied petroleum gas); 29,000 tonnes of py-gas and 62,000tonnes of sulphur this year.

In production, Qapco is slated to see a capacity of 720,000 tonnesof ethylene and 404,000 tonnes of LDPE, according to the IQinternal analysis.

Oil prices, to which chemical prices are linked, have surged toabove $115 per barrel this year, compared with less than $65 perbarrel a year ago but have slid since hitting a record high of over$147 a barrel in July.

Qatar Fertilisers Company (Qafco), another IQ subsidiary, hasreported 93% jump in its first half net profit to QR1.72mn, whichwas 37% of the overall net profits of the parent company (comparedwith 43% in the year-ago period).

Its net profitability growth was amid a 73% jump in total revenuesto QR2.28mn in the review period.

Qafco is expected to sell 425,000 tonnes of ammonia and 2.97mntonnes of urea this year, while its production capacity has beenestimated at 2.09mn tonnes and 2.92mn tonnes respectively.

August shipment offers from the Middle East wereheard at a subdued US$1930/MT CFR China, but typical offers in Asiacontinued to hover at least at least thirty dollars higher.
